the baltic connection

System of Apertures

The market constitutes the meeting place of the scheme. It is the main transport hub, where people arrive in trains, boats, water taxis, buses, cars and bicycles. It is a core of the community and a key part of the place-making strategy implemented in the scheme of living with water. Fish and people alike are embraced here in this distinct centre that is memorable through all the senses.

The smell of fresh hake and herring being hauled from the trawler boats, the sounds and sights of honest and hardworking fishermen on the docks, and the taste of those fine fruits of the Baltic sea. All this is on show in the theatre of the market, carefully curated through the use of a combination of materials set with- in a bold but permeable frame from which the stages are suspended and viewed.

Key lessons:

  • be aware of not designing self-consciously, an iterative design process is more beneficial

  • inter-generational spaces are promoted by social platforms and multi-sensorial experiences
